About Keith M. Johnston


Dr Keith M. Johnston is Senior Lecturer in Film, Television and Media Studies at the University of East Anglia, with specific interest in film trailers, 3D media, film genre and British cinema.

He is an internationally renowned academic expert in film marketing. His 2009 book, Coming Soon: Film Trailers and the Selling of Hollywood Technology (McFarland & Co.) remains one of the most cited works on the film trailer. His work on trailers has been published in Film International, Convergence, the Journal of Popular Film and Television, Media History and in Wired magazine's recent feature on the best trailer of all time; he co-edited a special issue of Frames Cinema Journal on 'Promotional Materials' and is currently editing a special issue of Arts Marketing, for release in 2015.

Keith is also an expert on the history of 3D media, with a particular interest in British 3D. He has delivered keynotes at 3DCS in London, and EMERGE @ East End Film Festival, and published on 3D in Film History, The Historical Journal of Film, Radio and Television, Convergence and two edited collections.

Keith's research interests in British cinema have developed around Ealing Studios, including the recent Ealing Revisited edited collection, and articles in the Journal of British Cinema and Television and Screen. His attempt to rewatch all 95 Ealing films (produced between 1938 and 1959) is chronicled elsewhere on this blog, and on the Huffington Post.
